A Place to Let Go

In my previous work, I explored the experience of nature and place. But the deeper I explored this inspiration, the more I came to realize its connection to self; self and nature intertwined, a reflection of each other that cannot be separated. In re-imagining how I might resolve this on canvas, it became clear that the work needed space and focus, like a room with a view or a meditation chamber. It needed to be a place to let go, to focus, and to see.

As a result, I’ve been working with more white space in my new work, and a more limited overall color palette. This white space seems to evoke an uncomfortable feeling for people. They seem to see it as empty. Perhaps it’s something similar to silence, like entering an empty room, some kind of void, like an isolation chamber, where you’re forced to acknowledge and be aware of yourself. And I think people are afraid to acknowledge themselves.

Maybe this is why whites are so perfect for the work I’m doing now. Perhaps they help to create a sort of isolation chamber, a place where you can let go of the noise from constructed worlds …a place where you can embrace yourself, and allow yourself to rebuild connections in a way that acknowledges our primal animal self in the universe.
